Cleaning After a Tornado: What You Should Do

Home renovationWith a recent tornado tearing up roofs and uprooting homes in Maryland, everyone is advised to pay attention to their property. The tornado may have gone, but you could still be dealing with problems it left behind. Things can be especially difficult if you don't see the extent of the damage as soon as possible.

Here are some things to do after a tornado:

Inspect Your Roof

Maryland's residents have had their roofs torn down because of the tornado. Even if yours seem fine, the tornado is strong enough that it could have broken or displaced some roof shingles. Any missing part of the roof can cause it to be more vulnerable for future tornados and even heavy rains. Uncle Skeeter's Roofing, Siding & Gutters explains that roofing contractors can inspect your roof for signs of damage and work on the necessary repairs as soon as you call them.

Check Trees and Branches

Trees and branches can cause a lot of damage. A tornado may have partially uprooted your tree or have broken a branch, and these could fall down at the most unfortunate time. You do not want that broken branch to hit your car or someone within the vicinity. When cleaning up after a storm, check trees for any parts that may seem weak and reinforce these if necessary. If they cannot be saved, you may need to remove the branch completely or uproot the tree yourself.

Look for Leaks

Leaks may be straightforward, especially if you have roof damage. However, they may also not be easy to see if your roof seems intact. Again, any missing shingle can cause problems, one of which is a leak. Leaving this unresolved may cause problems with your drywall and even lead to the ceiling collapsing.
