Not-So-Good Night: Don’t Let Bedbugs Bite You
Imagine that you are sound asleep in bed after a long day. As you snore away, hundreds of tiny insects crawl from inside your mattress and feast on your flesh. If that sends a shiver down your spine, then that is exactly what bedbugs can do.
Bedbugs may be nearly invisible to the eye, but when left untreated, they can cause damage both to you and your mattress. They can leave your skin with reddish blemishes and pockmarks caused by their bites.
There are multiple ways to rid you of the pests. Most recently, bedbug heat extermination is very effective. If you are unsure if there are bedbugs in your bedrooms, then here are some signs to look out for in and around your bed.
Tracking Their Trail
Do not let their name fool you. Bedbugs are not only restricted to bedrooms. Look for signs of bedbugs on your mattress or sheets. Bedbugs prefer dark corners, so start with the seams of mattresses or in between cushions. The critters have also been known to hide in drawer joints and electrical appliances.
Some signs you need to look out for are the following:
- Black spots around 1 millimeter in diameter — possible bedbug excrement
- Reddish spots — caused when a bedbug is crushed
- Eggs, eggshells, and tiny pieces of skin shed by bedbugs as they grow larger.
- Live bedbugs
Bedbugs are nocturnal animals. They prefer to feed on human blood, but they can also feed on blood of birds and other mammals. When they feed, they can travel from 5 to 20 feet.
Preventing It Before It Starts
Prevention is always better than cures. This means that the best solution is to always take precautions to prevent an infestation. The best way to do so is to minimize clutter and regularly clean your home.
Wash your sheets, blankets, bedspreads, and clothes regularly. As an extra precaution, regularly clean your laundry hamper as well. This can help lessen the number of places bedbugs can hide.
Bedbugs may seem too small to cause a problem, but when neglected, they can cause serious health problems. If you keep these pointers in mind, you won’t have to worry about bedbugs.
