Three Types of Thermoplastic Roofing Membranes
There have been many innovations in various economic sectors worldwide, and the roofing sector doesn’t lag behind. Thermoplastic roofing membranes are the latest option for property owners. These sheets are eco-friendly, sturdy, weldable, chemical and fire-resistant, and inexpensive.
There are various types of thermoplastic roofing membranes. The most common are PVC roofing sheets but there are also Thermoplastic olefin (TPO) and Chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) options. Here’s an overview to give you a better understanding of these categories.
These are produced through extrusion, spread coating, or calendaring. Manufacturers usually reinforce them with scrim, glass-fiber mats, or polyester. PVC roofing membranes also contain stabilizers and plasticizers to enhance their stability.
Chemical or heat welding seal these membranes, which come in various colors. White and gray PVC sheets are the most prevalent, though.
TPO membranes are produced using extrusion-coating, extrusion with lamination, or other lamination techniques. They’re a mixture of ethylene-propylene and polypropylene polymers, which are typically reinforced with polyester.
TPO roofing sheets also contain flame retardants and UV absorbers to achieve the desired physical properties. They are commonly available in white but other colors are available.
CPE is also a thermoplastic roofing option but it’s not common. It contains high-molecular-weight polyethylene, which has undergone chlorination to yield a rubber-like property. CPE roofing sheets are commonly used in their vulcanized state, though non-vulcanized membranes exist.
PVC roofing membrane could last for 20-30 years, while TPOs last for 10-20 years. You can expect that they would be worth the amount you spend in buying and installing them.
Not all thermoplastic roofing sheets are equal, though. The properties of your thermoplastic roofing membrane, regardless of the type, are primarily dependent on the manufacturer. You should, therefore, ensure you get your membrane from a reputable supplier that deals with superior products.
