Why the US Needs Doctors from Around the World Now More Than Ever

a female doctorThe US currently needs more than 8,000 primary care doctors. This is according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Foreign-born medical students can easily fill most of these vacancies in the future, as long as the country does not impose restrictive laws against their entry. Otherwise, the AAMC believes that the number of vacant primary care physician posts might increase up to 35,000 in the next ten years.

Emerging Needs

Several factors justify the need to recruit doctors and medical students from around the world. An aging population, for instance, will require more geriatricians. Most of them graduated from medical schools abroad, so enticing them to remain in the US will be helpful. On the other hand, an estimated 25% of all doctors in the country went to international medical schools. The country’s population has also become more diverse, which means that a various mix of physicians can help in attending to different needs of patients. Aside from doctors, a Grand View Research report showed that there is a shortage of nurses and other healthcare professionals, which may include emergency department management staff.

Healthcare Staffing

The increasing number of aging people worldwide will propel the healthcare staffing market to reach $43.6 billion by 2025, according to the Grand View report. Emergency staffing solutions will be more in-demand, as rising costs force hospitals to reduce their workforce. The report also expects locum tenens staffing to remain a popular choice for nurses in the near future. More nursing professionals have preferred to work as locum tenens due to flexible work shifts, travel opportunities, and short-term assignments. Hospitals and other medical facilities in the US, especially those in rural areas, need to consider third-party staffing solutions to fill job vacancies. The premise of a growing elderly population makes it more urgent for them to take action.
